Windmill Palm - lat. Trachycarpus fortunei

This palm, along with olive trees, can be seen more often when arranging terraces and continental gardens. It is an ideal palm tree for all those who want a touch of the Mediterranean in continental regions, because the windmill palm, unlike most other palm trees, tolerates low temperatures, up to - 15⁰ C. Nevertheless, younger plants should be protected in winter, because they are more sensitive to the cold, but they still withstand temperatures down to -7⁰ C. Although it is resistant to cold conditions and snow, the fragile leaves can break when exposed to strong winds, as well as too much direct sunlight. It is therefore recommended to plant the palm in shade or partial shade, where it generally grows higher (up to 12m).

It is indigenous to China, Japan, India and Myanmar where it can grow at altitudes up to 2400 m, and the trees are dioecious, which means that the flowers on the tree are either male or female.

The fact that it is not toxic to humans or pets makes it an ideal plant for any garden and balcony.

I n addition to being resistant to low temperatures, it is also resistant to the palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus) and the palm borer (Paysandisia archon), both insects are currently causing great damage to our palm trees along the coast, mostly the pineapple palm (Phoenix canariensis).

This palm is a safe choice for anyone who wants a palm tree to adorn their yard, because it is resistant, easy to maintain, and also grows well in pots.
