Sensitive Plant - lat. Mimosa pudica

The Mimosa pudica is a small shrub from the legume family, which grows in the Brazilian tropical forests. It stands out mostly for its sensitive leaves which react to various stimuli including touch, wind, light intensity, earthquakes and even cigarette smoke. These movements include where the leaves fold inwards if the stimulus is weaker, or folding of whole twigs if the stimulus is stronger. During the night, while the plant is dormant its leaves are folded, with its spines coming to the fore.

The Sensitive Plant loves light, so it should be kept next to an east or west facing window, where it will get up to 8 hours of light daily. Closed leaves during the day means that it is not getting enough light and it needs to be moved. The substrate should be well drained and constantly moist, as well as the air.

Though not especially prone to disease, the sensitive plant may become infested by common house plant pests and diseases as red spider, ringworm, root rot.

It is moderately toxic to pets, and has thorns, and that’s why it should be kept out of their reach.

It is a moderately demanding plant, that can be kept outdoors during the summer.
