Peacock Plant - lat. Calathea makoyana

I personally find the Peacock Plant to be one of the most attractive plants, mainly because of its unique leaves whose patterns resemble a peacock's tail feather. The leaves are pale green with a dark green feathered effect whilst its underside is purple.

Since Calathea makoyana is native to the rainforests of Brazil, where it grows as an undergrowth plant, it has similar humidity needs as ferns. Therefore, the plant should be constantly sprayed with distilled water or kept close to a humidifier. It should also be watered regularly, without the substrate drying out between watering. When watering, the water should be distilled. Like most houseplants, a room with indirect light suits this plant best.

The plant is quite susceptible to spider mites so in order to prevent this, shower the plant regularly with lukewarm water. It is also susceptible to root rot if over-watered.

Overall, the peacock plant is suited to experienced plant lovers, although it is good for pet owners because it is non-toxic.
