Spider plant – lat. Chlorophytum comosum ‘Vittatum’

This plant from southern Africa is a slightly different houseplant which can often be seen in gardens. It is very easy to maintain, so it is ideal for those homes and gardens where there are seemingly not ideal conditions for growing plants.

In order for this plant to grow as well as possible, it needs a room in which there is enough indirect sun. For rooms with less light, the green variant of plants is better suited. When planted outdoors it is recommended to plant in a shady place. In summer, the plant should be watered regularly, and during the winter months it is enough to sporadically water. If kept indoors it is an excellent air purifier. The plant is recognizable by its young plantlets that can grow on top of the leaves after they bloom which gives its unique look - which is where the name spider plant comes from. These young plantlets can easily take root and create a new plant.

Spider mites often attack this plant, this can be prevented by regular showering of the plant.

Fun fact - my spider plant survived 6 weeks without water. Although it looked a pale gray, its colour returned quickly after being watered! (due to the earthquake in Zagreb I was forced to leave the apartment in a rush with the Corona pandemic, I couldn't return to Zagreb for a time. I packed things in a hurry and the poor spider plant was one of two plants forgotten in my apartment…)
