Southern magnolia - lat. Magnolia grandiflora

One of the most beautiful trees in general, I don’t know what I prefer more – the Magnolia's stunning leaves, its elegant shape or its magnificient flowers.

This evergreen tree is cone-shaped (habitus for you geeks) and has thick leathery leaves with a unique rusty color on the underside. It also has beautiful cream-coloured flowers in spring.

The tree comes from North America but has spread across the globe thanks to its aesthetic looks.

Magnolia's are ideal for acid soils and best be planted in a position so that the tree is in the sun or in half shade. Take care to plant the Magnolia so that it is sheltered from strong wind gusts.

A dwarf form of this tree also exists so you can keep it a pot. It should be watered regularly during the summer to keep it looking healthy.

Although the magnolia is quite resistant to diseases, it is can be attacked by pests such as magnolia scale and japanese beetles.

It is not toxic to humans or animals.
