Rose Grape - lat. Medinilla magnifica

Updated: Apr 6, 2021

Medinilla is an exotic beauty that stands out with pink bracts surrounding its pink inflorescence. It is one of the most beautiful flowering plants that can be kept as a houseplant, but it profits greatly from being taken out on the balcony or in the garden in the summer.

In nature, it grows in the tropical forests of the Philippines, mainly on trees, which classifies Medinilla as "epiphytes". Unlike orchids (which are also epiphytes), Medinilla does not have aerial roots to absorb atmospheric moisture, but instead fleshy leaves, similar to those of succulents, with which it accumulates the water it needs.

The Medinilla needs a warm and humid environment, with a room temperature between 17 and 25 ° C. When outside temperatures drop below 10 ° C, the plant should be brought indoors. It can grow in filtered shade to full sun, though it prefers to avoid direct afternoon sun. It should be watered once a week so that the substrate does not dry out between watering, and every few days it would be beneficial to spray the leaves (more often in winter than in summer, due to heating). Transplanting and pruning can be done after flowering season, and should be done regularly, because this plant can reach over 1 meter in height. The Medinilla is most easily propagated by dividing the plant, best when it is being transplanted.

It is not susceptible to disease, but can be attacked by red spiders and mealybug. The red spider can be easily prevented by spraying the leaves regularly. It is also non-toxic to humans and animals.
