Pampas grass - lat. Cortaderia selloana

Updated: Mar 25, 2021

This decorative grass has its place in various gardens throughout our globe, including homes once dried.

Pampas Grass is a perennial, originally from South America and can grow between 150 and 300 cm high. It can be planted not only in soil but also in containers. It grows best in sunny positions that are sheltered from the strong winds. Pampas is a dioecious species (meaning that they are plants which will individually either grow female or male flowers) - if you want rich and large flowers, make sure you grab a male plant.

It is also ideal for continental areas where it can withstand temperatures down to -15 ° C, and it is enough to simply water it moderately.

This plant is not poisonous to children or pets, but it should still be planted out of reach of children because it has very sharp leaves, which can easily cut trough flesh! As for diseases and pests, insects do not cause them problems although fungal diseases can possibly occur due to excess water or moisture.

The decorative flowers are best cut in autumn but be sure to wear gloves and long sleeves due to its sharp leaves.

Although Pampas looks fantastic, bear in mind that it is an invasive species, meaning that it spreads easily and quickly and can displace native species from their natural habitat.
