Gerbera daisies - lat. Gerbera jamesonii

To most of us, when we hear about gerbera daisies we think about the flowers that can be bought at a florists and used in bouquets and such. However gerberas are also a very attractive perennial that can be kept as a houseplant, or in Mediterranean environments as an outdoor plant too.

My favorite flower, there is nothing more beautiful for me than a bouquet of gerberas. I still own a gerber in a terracotta pot at my home on the Dalmatian coast which has lasted over 12 years. Sometimes the leaves freeze in the winter because I didn’t take it inside but in the spring it sprouts new leaves. I also own a second gerber which has been happily living in an apartment in Zagreb for 2 years now and treats me with new flowers three times a year.

It’s native in southern parts of Africa.

This plant comes in different flower colors and are relatively easy to maintain. It needs to be kept in the front of an east or south facing window, where it is exposed for at least 5 hours of sun daily. During the summer it can be freely taken out to the balcony but beware that when nighttime temperatures drop below 10 ° C, it should be brought back indoors. Water it every 3 to 5 days, depending on the conditions of your home. Remove the flowers when they begin to wilt to avoid the plant from rotting.

They are attacked by the glasshouse whitefly which are easy to remove.

It is not toxic to humans or animals, so it is a safe plant for every household.
