The Ficus genus includes figs and common ficus, among others. The fiddle leaf fig has experienced a real boom in the last few years as a houseplant.
Its origin is from West Africa.
The fiddle leaf fig prefers sunny parts of the home without direct sun. Water it every 7 - 10 days, depending on the conditions under which it grows. It is recommended to spray the leaves with water every couple of days and if necessary to wipe the dust off the leaves, so that it absorbs more sun light.
It can be attacked by classical houseplant diseases (like mites and scales). Appearance of brown spots or edges on leaves is a common issue - brown edges mean overwatering, whilst brown spots mean either underwatering, too much sun, or the room temperature is consistently too cold.
In dogs and cats it can cause serious irritation to the mouth and mucous membranes.
If you want this highly photogenic plant in your space that comes in different sizes and shapes, prepare yourself for its demanding nature.
