This evergreen shrub is known for his attractive red young leaves.
It’s a hybrid between Photina glabra i P. serrulata, and therefore it has no natural habitat. The hybrid originated from Alabama (USA) and the cultivar with is fire red leaves from New Zealand.
It’s an awesome shrub for hedges, but it also can grow in pots. The best position for Photinia is in full sun, or partly shade. Hardly to temperatures around -15 °C and if planted in pots till -5 °C. To maintain the attractive red leaves its recommended to continually trim the ends of the shoots. Evergreen shrubs like Photinia can be trimmed allover the growing season, except autumn, because of frost which could do demage to the cutted branches.
Water the plant once a week at the base during dry periods if planted in the ground, if it is potted water 2 – 3 times per week.
Diseases that can attack Photinia are fireblight (Erwinia amylovora) and from pests vine weevil (Otiorhynchus sulcatus) which damages the leaves.
Non toxic for cats and dogs, so you can plant it in your garden if you have furry friends.
I like this because of its bright red leaves, which gives gardens a nice contrast to the green surrounding, and it is really easy to maintain.
