Boston Fern - lat. Nephrolepis exeltata

Updated: May 25, 2020

One unmissable classic, that reminds me of my grandmother’s house.

It comes from the tropical areas of South and North America, and Africa.

The Boston Fern can be kept in half shadow or bright spots outside of direct sunlight. It should be watered regularly but take care that there is no water left in the pot. During warmer months it’s recommended to immerse the root bale in soft water at room temperature for around 15 minutes. It’s good to spray the plant every few days with water, especially during the winter season.

The fern should be repotted when it outgrows the pot but that’s not often, because of the shallow root. More often you should refill the pot with humus soil that’s slightly acid.

Diseases that can attack the Boston Fern are root rot when overwatered and parasites (like mealybugs and mites) that can be removed with a solution of spirit and soap sprayed on the infected area on a daily basis.

The plant is non toxic to cats and dogs and can be kept without fear in your home.

This fern is a wonderful and timeless classic.
