Bird of paradise - lat. Strelitzia reginea

An evergreen perennial, which is a close relative of the banana tree, which not only decorates gardens in warm regions, but along with Strelitzia nicolai, makes an attractive houseplant. The genus Strelitzia was named after the German princess Sophie Charlotte von Mecklenburg-Strelitz.

Bird of paradise is native South Africa.

The bird of paradise, in addition to having beautiful large leaves, also has a beautiful flower in the shape of a bird, that’s where the Bird of paradise name comes from. In order for this plant to grow outdoors it needs an min. temperature of 10 ° C, it should be planted in a place with direct sunlight or in partial shade in well-drained soil, which should be kept constantly moist. As a houseplant, it likes bright light without direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day and should be watered when the surface layer of soil dries. During the summer it can be taken outside on the balcony or in the garden.

Strelitzia is harmless to humans, but can cause nausea and vomiting for cats and dogs.

I love birds of paradise because of their exotic appearance and beautiful flower that I see more and more often in flower shops, as a cut flower.
